The Supreme Court on Thursday clarified that the Representation of the People (RP) Act recognizes the Aadhaar card as valid identity proof for inclusion in electoral rolls.
A bench of the apex court observed that the UIDAI’s notification cannot override statutory provisions of the RP Act, which allows Aadhaar to be used for identity verification while enrolling voters.
The clarification came during a hearing on the linkage of Aadhaar with voter IDs. The Court stated that no administrative circular can restrict the scope of the law and that Aadhaar remains an acceptable document for voter registration purposes.
The ruling settles ongoing confusion over whether Aadhaar could be used for electoral purposes amid concerns about privacy and data sharing.
